heady collectables is a lighthearted production, using vibrant characters, animated dance, humorous poetry, and wooden boxes to weave together idiomatic ‘head’ expressions. With the syncopated rhythms of ragtime music, this witty production highlights the collaborative process of Baltimore’s Deep Vision Dance Company with DC poet Dorrit Carroll.
From the start, audiences are triggered to consider just how often American culture refers to their head – “headstrong,” “let me wrap my head around this,” “sleepyhead,” etc. Choreographer, Nicole A. Martinell, pokes fun at society’s (and her own) fascination with the human head through an introductory dance-monologue. This solo playfully strings together words from her journal, a true peak into the choreographer’s creative brain at work.
Sharing the spotlight, six colorfully unique characters interact and tease one another. The story unfolds as the characters cleverly explore the literal and figurative interpretation of head idioms, such as “out of my head,” “can’t keep my head on straight,” and “two heads are better than one.” Audiences joyfully learn about each character’s quirks and quips while tapping their toes to the uplifting scores of Scott Joplin’s ragtime music. Watch in amazement, as the dancers manipulate four black and white hollow boxes, creating scenery, obstacles, and even costumes.
Whimsical characters such as ‘Airhead’ and ‘Hothead’ developed as Martinell and the Deep Vision dancers explored head idioms through movement, idiosyncratic gesture, and distinct character-postures. Taking inspiration from the ragtime era, film, comedians, and classic cartoons, the dancers trained fervently to perfect their comedic timing and extreme facial expressions. The quirky, yet flowing movement vocabulary evokes emotion and arouses curiosity, leaving the audience with questions, images, and stories spiraling through their minds.

Martinell, is a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization upholding the mission to engage, inspire, and motivate the community through high quality dance performances and educational experiences.
