Coming to The Capital Fringe Festival: ‘In This Economy’ by John Krizel

“A new play about love, unemployment, and Gchat,” In This Economy will have its world premiere at the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival. Written, produced & directed by John Krizel, this independent comedy-drama explores the diverging paths to adulthood of DC twentysomethings, through its depiction of the relationship between employed Emily (Anna Jackson) and unemployed James (TD Smith).

Emily (Anna Jackson) and James (TD Smith).

Krizel, a recent graduate of George Washington University, is making his Fringe debut with this production. Unemployed for several months before writing the play, he sought to create an authentic depiction of unemployed life: lengthy and pointless Gchat conversations (recreated via projector onscreen during several scenes of the play), awkward job interviews, uncomfortable happy hour conversations, and so on. While at heart a traditional love story, the play also contrasts the enthusiasm of the DC young professional community with the aimlessness of many postgrad job-seekers, to make it both timely and timeless.

In This Economy also features Chris Aldrich, Dana Maas, Nate Wolfson, and Emily Marra (all playing multiple roles) as the couple’s friends, colleagues, and parents.
