2013 Capital Fringe Show Preview: ‘Disco Jesus and the Apostles of Funk’ by Vaughn Irving

Who’s the only son of God who really knows how to get it on?

It’s Jesus…Disco Jesus.

DJAF5There is no energy in the world quite like a live funk band. You don’t even have to enjoy funk music. When the bass slaps and the horns roar, there is no one in the room that won’t tap his/her feet. The groove has power. Music is a religion. It can inspire, educate, enlighten and move your body and soul. Disco Jesus and the Apostles of Funk is a celebration of everything that music can give you…and even take from you.

I have been writing this musical for two years and it has been quite a ride. At first, the show was just a long string of bad Jesus puns. But, as I continued to work, the story became bigger than I intended. It became a story about art and love and faith. Not faith in God (in fact there is surprisingly little about religion in the play), but faith in each other and faith in oneself. Oh – but don’t worry, we left plenty of bad Jesus puns and have loads of hot disco and funk to spare.

As writer and producer, I am honored to be working with the outstanding group of actors who have signed on as “Apostles of Funk.” DC superstar *Felicia Curry (The Kennedy Center, Capitol Steps), and nine other fantastically talented performers make up the cast/band of this funkadellic crusade: *Vaughn Irving (Rep Stage, and Imagination Stage), Autumn Seavey Hicks (Keegan Theatre and Washington Savoyards), Kedren Spencer (Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre), *Matthew Schleigh (Olney Theatre and Dizzy Miss Lizzie’s Roadside Review), Alex AucionBru Ajueyitsi, Suzanne Edgar, Elizabeth Dutton, Steve Przybylski, and Paul Foreman.

Co-composer, Paul Foreman, and I have been lost in the 70s for the last two years, listening to everything from James Brown to The Village People. We have included a taste every sub-genre that can be considered funk or disco and the result is: a psychogroovulent funkstorm that will tear the roof off the world and rattle your inner consciousness with vibrations of inter-dimensional soul. We promise you’re gonna leave the theater shaking what the Good Lord gave ya, ready to take on the world, and with the answer to the age-old question: “What Would Disco Jesus Do?”
