This production is like a love letter to DC, a gift from my heart, and very precious as the first production in New Orleans was 8 years ago. I stumbled upon the story in a vintage costume shop, buying an antique rhinestone bra .
The original owner was Zita, and I learned she and her sister Nita (Â had fled Hungary to become international dance stars. The 1920s vaudeville circuit was more glamorous than burlesque , and more cosmopolitan than Broadway. This is my re-imagined show, a homage to their talent that took them to Paris and Shanghai and beyond!
Other women of the era have inspired me: Lola Montez, an Irish girl who became a Spanish dancer and a countess (she is in our show)! Loie Fuller , too, who made fluffy skirts high art and became the first dancer in the first silent films!
Our wonderful band, lead by Daveed Korup, is a mix of Hungarian gypsy, vintage tango and DC sophistication.
