Coming to The Capital Fringe Festival: ‘The Last Flapper’ by Leland Strott

THE RED DOOR THEATRE PRESENTS THE LAST FLAPPER, PART OF THE 7TH ANNUAL CAPITAL FRINGE FESTIVAL JULY 12 – 29, 2011

The Last Flapper is a theatrical biography of the original flapper, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald.

Kate Erin Gibson (Zelda Fitzgerald).

From playwright William Luce, The Last Flapper is the definitive portrait of Mrs. F. Scott Fitzgerald: the glamorous, fun loving, and tragic Zelda. Set in an insane asylum on the last day of Zelda’s life, the play unfolds as a hypnotic session. Zelda tells of her innocent rebellion as a southern belle, of her destructive marriage, and of her mental disintegration.

The Fitzgerald’s local ties to Maryland include a brief stay in Baltimore while Zelda was undergoing treatment for mental illness, and Scott’s family roots in Montgomery County. Zelda and Scott are buried in Rockville, Maryland, in the Fitzgerald family plot.

The Last Flapper features Kate Erin Gibson as Zelda Fitzgerald. Carmela Lanza-Weil directs, with lighting design by Mark Lanks and costume design by Erin Heintzinger. This is the first Capital Fringe production for Gibson and The Red Door Theatre Company.

The Red Door Theatre Company’s mission is to produce socially relevant theatrical pieces and to offer a safe haven for controversial or delicate subject matter to be explored on stage. The New York-based company provides opportunities for performers, designers, directors, playwrights, composers, choreographers, stage managers and other artists, in all stages of their careers, to express themselves in a risk-free environment.
