‘Dr. Science’s Science Time Science-va-ganza!’ by Andrew L. Baughman

What is the secret formula for an exquisite fringe production? Well, author/comedian/molecular biologist Adam Ruben and his team decisively prove that it doesn’t take production budget (any!) or even over-preparedness to achieve Fringe Gold. All it takes is CHEMISTRY, and that is what Ruben and his co-writer/performers Chuck Na and Jason Pittman have in abundance. Dr. Science’s Science Time Science-va-ganza may well be the funniest production I have ever experienced at CapFringe. Attending this production is literally like hanging out with your three nerdiest pals.

Adam Ruben and Chuck Na.

The team has turned a basement classroom of Mount Vernon church into a typical grade school science assembly, led by Ruben as Dr. Science. Ruben can only be described as the human incarnation of Kermit The Frog. The first half of his presentation is innocuous audience-participatory fun for all ages – it’s a good thing that food and drink is not allowed in this venue, because if it were, you would undoubtably snarf a beverage. Then something amazing happens (no spoilers here!), and the show takes a witty but decidedly political bent that might prove less amusing to more conservative patrons. Liberal-minded audience members, however, will howl all the more.

Dr. Science is a blast. When things go right, it’s hysterical. When things go wrong, it’s even better.

Running time: 45 minutes
