2013 Capital Fringe Show Preview: ‘Godiva Dates & One Night Stands’ by Matthew Ripa

DOORWAY ARTS ENSEMBLE AND REGIE CABICO PREMIERE HIS NEW SOLO SHOW: GODIVA DATES & ONE NIGHT STANDS AT CAPITAL FRINGE FESTIVAL

logoGodiva Dates & One Night Stands is a tour de force of poetic virtuosity & comic gold performed by the fairy godmother of DC spoken word, Regie Cabico.

Regie Cabico’s latest spoken word play, GODIVA DATES & ONE NIGHT STANDS chronicles his encounters with poet stalkers, Canadian Thanksgiving, sextings and astrological whimsy. Trying not to have his life turn into a Barbara Streisand movie, Regie is on an eternal mission to get his groove back. The performance features spoken word poetry intertwined with storytelling to bring the audience a truly one of a kind experience. Regie deftly blends humor and heartfelt sincerity into a dazzling 60-minute performance that will have you rolling in your seats as you hear poems and stories of one night stands gone bad and about Regie’s attempts to get himself on the market.

If you have not encountered the fabulosity that is Regie Cabico, then you have missed out. Regie is a gem of the spoken word and slam poetry scene. He is one of the country’s leading innovators and pioneers of the poetry slam having won 3 National Top Prizes and winning The Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam. Bust Magazine ranked him in the 100 Men We Love & The Kenyon Review called him the “Lady Gaga of Poetry.” He has appeared on two seasons of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and has also appeared NPR’s Snap Judgement.

His work is published in over 40 anthologies including Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Café, Spoken Word Revolution & The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry. Mr. Cabico received the Writers for Writers Award for his work with at-risk youth from Poets and Writers. Other recipients include Arthur Miller, Edward Albee, Amy Tan, and Stephen King.

On stage as a performer, Mr. Cabico has shared the stages with Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg & Michael Ealy as part of Howard Zinn’s People’s History and with Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg, and Smashing Pumpkins as a featured poet on Lollapalooza.
