“The homeless look is not working for me” exclaims master storyteller Regie Cabico in his one-man jaunt through the raunchy trials and tribulations of dating. The subject matter is nothing new, but Cabico spins a yarn so captivating he could be reading from the phone book and the audience would listen.
Cabico totes the line between poetry, stand-up comedy, and storytelling, and the piece moves seamlessly between the three genres. The transitions occur just as a modern attention span might be tempted to wane; succeeding in keeping the audience engrossed. A sad bit of poetry would be flanked by a story about sex on roller-skates, or a bit of crazy dancing. Director Matt Ripa’s subtle hand can be seen in these transitions, but also in the mood of the piece. Ripa’s choice of venue, music, and movement all aided in creating just the right tone to showcase Cabico as a truly delightful wordsmith. Most impressive is Cabico’s poetry, which manages to be both lewd and eloquent at the same time.
Godiva Dates an One Night Stands makes poetry approachable, and you’ll find your ear has tuned in without a struggle. It’s a great pick for anyone new to poetry, but a solid choice for any Fringer that wants a really well told story.
