Tribes features a deaf protagonist, Billy, whose hearing family forces him to read lips. Billy has been deaf since birth. His sister, brother and parents are smart, cultured and love to argue, but they don’t listen very well. All of that changes when Billy meets a girl who is losing her own hearing.
James “Joey” Caverly, who is deaf, stars as Billy. He also played the role at SpeakEasy Stage Company in Boston in the fall – in September and October. He is a graduate of the Gallaudet University Theatre Arts Department, where he directed Noises Off in 2010, earning recognition from The Kennedy Center in a regional college competition.
Tribes, by British writer Nina Raine, won the New York Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play in 2012. It is being made into a movie by Mandalay Pictures (Les Miserables, Seven Days in Tibet, and I Know What You Did Last Summer).
The production is being directed by The Studio Theatre’s Artistic Director David Muse, who arranged for the cast, designers, and staff to participate in a cultural and communication workshop to discuss Deaf culture, etiquette, and American Sign Language. It was led by Aaron Kubey, former President of National Theatre of the Deaf, and hosted by Tribes production partner Fourth Wall Gone—an outreach initiative of No Rules Theatre Company that provides a platform for promoting discussion, collaboration, and access among deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing theatre artists in Washington, DC. Another partner for the production is the Gallaudet University’sTheatre Department.
