Tomorrow and Sunday- March 15 & 16, 2014 – at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, MD, Broadway legend Jason Robert Brown will perform his well known musical, Songs for a New World with the students of Young Artists of America. He’ll be fresh off the successful opening of his new Broadway musical, The Bridges of Madison County, which opened recently on Broadway.
52 instrumentalists and 35 vocalists from the Young Artists of America will perform, joined by another Broadway star Adam Michael Kaufman from 13 the Musical, who will be the Guest Pianist and will be playing a 9 foot Steinway D Concert Grand Piano on stage with YAA’s orchestra and singers!

JASON ROBERT BROWN has been hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and his “extraordinary, jubilant theater music” (Chicago Tribune) has been heard all over the world, whether in one of the hundreds of productions of his musicals every year or in his own incendiary live performances. The New York Times refers to Jason as “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical.” His four major musicals as composer and lyricist include: 13, a musical written with Robert Horn and Dan Elish, which began its life in Los Angeles in 2007 and opened on Broadway in 2008; The Last Five Years, which was cited as one of Time Magazine’s 10 Best of 2001 and won Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics, and whose movie version will be coming out in 2014 starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick; Parade, a musical written with Alfred Uhry and directed by Harold Prince, which premiered at Lincoln Center Theatre in 1998, and subsequently won both the Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Musical, as well as garnering Jason the Tony Award for Original Score; and Songs for a New World, a theatrical song cycle directed by Daisy Prince, which played Off-Broadway in 1995, and has since been seen in hundreds of productions around the world. Parade was also the subject of a major revival directed by Rob Ashford, first at London’s Donmar Warehouse and then at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. His most recent musical, The Bridges of Madison County just opened in February 2014 on Broadway to rave reviews. In the wings: Honeymoon In Vegas, a musical adaptation of the 1992 film, written with Andrew Bergman. An orchestral adaptation of E.B. White’s novel The Trumpet of the Swan, written with Marsha Norman, premiered at The Kennedy Center. Jason is the winner of the 2002 Kleban Award for Outstanding Lyrics and the 1996 Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Foundation Award for Musical Theatre. Jason’s songs, including the cabaret standard “Stars and the Moon,” have been performed and recorded by Audra McDonald, Betty Buckley, Karen Akers, Renée Fleming, Philip Quast, Jon Hendricks and many others, and his song “Someone To Fall Back On” was featured in the Walden Media film, Bandslam. Jason studied composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., with Samuel Adler, Christopher Rouse, and Joseph Schwantner.
Pianist ADAM MICHAEL KAUFMAN served as the Associate Music Director for the developmental reading of FINDING NEVERLAND with director Diane Paulus, and starring Jason Alexander and Brian D’Arcy James. He also was the Associate Music Director for the workshop of THE BLUE ANGEL, where he worked with Nadia DiGiallonardo and Lon Hoyt. Adam provided music assistance for THE LAST FIVE YEARS movie starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick, and the Broadway bound musical THE LAST SHIP, featuring music & lyrics by Sting. As a pianist, Adam played in both the Broadway and Goodspeed productions of 13 THE MUSICAL, and is currently a rehearsal pianist for THE BOOK OF MORMON.
As an orchestrator, Adam’s credits include the 2013 BCEFA GYPSY OF THE YEAR at the Minskoff theatre, and his contributions to FROM BROADWAY WITH LOVE, a Sandy Hook benefit concert featured on PBS. Adam also co-orchestrated FOREVERMAN THE MUSICAL, for which he received the NYMF Outstanding Orchestration award in 2012.
RACHELLE FLEMING has touched audiences in a wide variety of styles from cabaret to classical with a “glorious, rich voice and timble that goes directly to the heart.” Of her singing on Tiempo Libre’s Sony release, My Secret Radio, Jazz Weekly writes, “Rachelle Fleming’s voice on ‘After The Love Is Gone’ is as agonizingly penetrating as a Dear John Letter.” Recent guest solo performances include appearances with: three-time Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre at Festival Miami; Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra; Greater Rochester Jazz Orchestra at the Rochester International Jazz Festival; jazz pianist Fred Hersch for Classical Action; jazz pianist Shelly Berg; and for the Boca Raton Arts Festival.
Recent theatrical performances include: Rose in a workshop production of Enchanted April at Arena Stage; Joanne in Company; and Lieutenant Simone in NYC production of ‘jazz opera’ Space in the Heart at Symphony Space. Rachelle is a background vocalist on Renée Fleming’s Decca/ Mercury Records pop CD, Dark Hope. Promotional work for Dark Hope included performing background vocals on the nationally televised concerts: Live From Lincoln Center’s Renee Fleming @ The Penthouse; and for President and Mrs. Obama at the Ford Theatre’s annual July 4th Celebration; as well as a music video for the hit single “Endlessly.”
Rachelle is in demand nationally as a teaching artist and teaches in the Music Theater Division at The Catholic University of America.
MICHAEL J. MAINWARING, a YAA alumnus, is thrilled to be returning as a guest artist. Michael’s previous Washington area credits include Dreamgirls at Signature Theatre (2012 Helen Hayes Award, Best Musical), In Performance at the Kennedy Center, Shenandoah and Ford’s Presidential Gala: An American Celebration at Ford’s Theatre; Oliver! at Olney Theatre, Thunder Knocking at the Door, Creative Cauldron, and Three Little Birds (World Premiere) at Adventure Theatre. This spring, Michael will be making his Arena Stage debut in Smokey Joe’s Cafe.

She has done a full-scale tour, which included stops in over 150 major cities across the U.S., as well as Canada and Saudi Arabia. Nova has been given the opportunity to work with an array of A-list artists such as Stevie Wonder, Ashford & Simpson, Yolanda Adams, Karen Clark-Sheard, IMX, Hezekiah Walker, Freddie Jackson, Will Downing and others. Nova can also be seen performing on your local PBS or MPT television stations on the musical special “3 Mo’ Divas” which was nominated for a 2010 NAACP Image Award. She is currently working with Roberta Flack as a background singer, where she is being featured on Ms. Flack’s upcoming CD entitled, Roberta Flack Presents Real Artists Symposium.
